Carter The Great was the stage name of Charles Joseph Carter (1874 - 1936), who was an American magician held in very high regard by his colleagues as well as those who saw him perform. His career began when he was only 10 years old and took the name of "Master Charles Carter the Original Boy Magician". Carter developed and performed many classic acts including the classic "sawing a woman in half" illusion (an elaborate surgical-themed version with "nurses" in attendance), making a live elephant disappear and "cheating the gallows", where a shrouded Carter would vanish, just as he dropped at the end of a hangman's noose. He was also known for devising acts that were inspired by recent events that captured the public's imagination, such as the discovery of Tutankhamen's tomb in 1922 or John Dillinger's famous jailbreak in 1934. In addition to his magic talents, he was very skilled at promoting his appearances through the use of intricately designed posters and flyers depicting his special tricks. His colorful poster images showed Carter himself and some of the magic he was offering. He was often depicted wearing exotic costumes to enhance the aura of mystery surrounding him. This is an Original Vintage Poster; it is not a reproduction. This poster is conservation mounted, linen backed, and in excellent condition. There are minor areas of color variation of the margins not affecting the image. We guarantee the authenticity of all our posters. This measures 80" x 104" (203cm x 264cm).
